Fiscal Responsibility

As Town Supervisor, my main goal is to provide services, and maintain public safety and quality of life of all our residents, while ensuring costs are minimized and current debt is reduced. As a result of sound budgetary practices, the Town of North Hempstead is financially strong and stable. Currently, the Town has its highest bond rating in history of Aa1 (assigned by Moody’s), and the highest rating attainable (MIG1) on our long term bonds. I am extremely proud of the fact that for the first time since 1982, the Town Board voted on the budget before Election Day. We unanimously passed, with bi-partisan support, the 2015 Town budget under the NYS tax cap, while reducing expenditures.

Looking toward the near future, I have focused on creating a solid and fiscally responsible Capital Plan, or a blue print, for the Town’s future infrastructure investments and how we plan on funding them. This plan will enable us to address capital projects such as: road repaving, repairing Town-owned facilities, and improving our parks, among other things.

Environmentally Friendly Practices

As Supervisor, another vital initiative which I am passionate about is the promulgation of sustainable environmental practices that safeguard all of us from toxins and pollutants, which impact our health and safety. I have taken the lead in advocating to protect our aquifers, the sole source of our drinking water here on Long Island. In addition, I led the Town Board to pass legislation requiring PSEG-LI to put warning signs on all new utility poles to alert the public to the presence of pentachlorophenol – a known carcinogen used as a preservative and pesticide to treat these poles. No community should be exposed to such toxins without being warned to take precautions should they come in contact with them.

Government Services and Programs

As Town Supervisor I have worked tirelessly alongside my colleagues to improve the efficiency and productivity of our Town government. There is always room for improvement, and we should be amenable to change when something is not working. During my first term, one of my top priorities has been addressing issues with the Building Department and the frustration many residents have expressed. Our Building Department has gone through an entire restructuring process, making it more costumer friendly, accessible (through the use of technology), and more efficient overall.

At the Town of North Hempstead we provide wonderful services to our seniors and I am proud to say that we became the first Town in Nassau County to receive the World Health Organization Global Network of Age-Friendly Communities designation, given by AARP, which declares the Town an age-friendly place to live.

Our award winning Project Independence program continues to be a huge success. Project Independence helps our seniors remain in their own homes and community while assuring they are in optimal health. Social work services and nursing services are provided to all town residents 60 and older. In addition, by partnering with our local taxi companies, we are able to provide transportation services that allow our senior residents to travel to their doctor’s appointments and grocery shop. Not only does this improve the quality of life of our seniors by reducing any anxiety they may have about whether or not a loved one can take them to their doctor, or for their basic food shopping, but it also creates and economic boost for our local businesses. In the end it is a mutual relationship that enhances our quality of life and benefits all of us.

Open & Transparent Government

As Supervisor, my approach to governing has been to use the ABCs - Accessibility, Bipartisanship and Collaboration. These are the building blocks that I have found to be very important when building a government that really works for the benefit of all people and not just a select few. I place great emphasis on open government and transparency in all aspects of government. I frequently refer to our Town Budget and Capital Plan as the blue prints to running an efficient government. Both of these comprehensive plans, can be found on-line with details of the funding sources and bonding authorization, permitting our residents to see exactly what current/future projects will be undertaken, and how they will be funded. Our Town Board has worked together in a bi-partisan manner, passing both plans unanimously with input from all our Councilmembers.

In addition, we’ve instituted some changes to Town Board meetings-by adding public comment to the beginning of the meetings, and live streaming town board meetings on our websites so residents may watch on their smart devices. Furthermore, residents now have the ability to download and submit many forms online, and we are working on even more user-friendly initiatives such as online credit card payments for the Town Clerk’s Office, Animal Shelter, and Building Department. Our 311 system continues to be a centralized high-volume call center used by constituents with issues in the Town.

Last year, we implemented a 311 online component as well as the ability to submit service requests through the “My North Hempstead” mobile application. This “app” provides a myriad of services to Town residents. It is seamlessly integrated with the Town’s 311 Call Center, allowing constituents to place 311 service requests 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. It also allows for photos to be submitted with requests and can be a useful tool when reporting a pothole or a non-functioning streetlight. So far this year (thru March 22), 417 service requests for potholes have been created.

Going forward, I will continue to serve you with transparency, openness, and inclusiveness as we work together to make North Hempstead an even better place.
